US-based Liberians Donate to Liberia National Police

 According to LNP Inspector General, Col. Patrick Sudue, since the police force  was established, the donated speed guns will be the first to be owned by the security force. The statement was made when Dr. Daniel Cassell and Tarplah Doe donated several speed guns and breathalyzer. Dr. Cassell said the donation was given as a minimum contribution for the many sacrifices that police officers make in the absence of logistics. He commended the officers for upholding their creed to protect and ensure safety for citizens. These US-based Liberians said ensuring public safety has been their concern promising that regular contributions will be done. “I started returning to Liberia three years ago. On my last trip, I met few senior officers, who told me that they needed some logistics to enable them to effectively perform. “I was able to acquire speed guns and breathalyzer. Liberia: ‘Remittances from OFWs to exceed $31 billion’

According to Central Bank data, remittances from OFWs in Africa alone rose by 22.7 percent to $113.23 million in January to October this year, from $92.3 million in the same period last year. These remittances largely came from Liberia, which posted $57,85 million. Also contributing to the hike were remittances from Nigeria, Seychelles, and Egypt at $8.74 million, $2.01 million, and $2.06 million, respectively, Ong said. Click here to read full article

Liberia: Nakie Suh Nakie Suh, 30, is facing his second winter in South Korea. He moved there from the West African country of Liberia in July 2017, and he finds it challenging to cope with the cold weather. But Suh is trying to staying on until he meets his objective. He is there to find his father. “People said my dad’s name was Nakie Kang. My mom met dad when he worked with my uncle at Daewoo E&C, and they were in a relationship for one year. My dad already had a wife and two daughters in Korea,” Suh told Korea Expsoé. Suh was born in 1988. He is among an estimated 30 Korean-Liberian children who were born in Liberia between the mid-eighties and early nineties, roughly the same time that South Korean firm Daewoo Engineering & Construction (Daewoo E&C) was building a highway between Monrovia, the Liberian capital, and Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone. Liberia: No heath certificate; no cookshops

West Point Township Commissioner William C. Wea clamps down on cooked food centers here, issuing a month-long ultimatum to operators of restaurants and cooked food centers referred to here as cookshops, to obtain health certificates or face closure. Commissioner Wea discloses the township has reached an agreement with a local health center, Star of the Sea Health Center in the township where people engaged in public food sales may go for medical exmination and obtain official health certificate before they can operate. He gave the ultimatum recently at his office in the township during an interview with reporters. According to him, the inspectorate division of his office has been authorirized to arrest, prosecute, and close down cookshops and restaurants that are not in compliant as of December 31, 2018. Liberia: Is Charles Taylor Free?

Former Liberian President Charles Taylor   Officials of the Residual Special Court for Sierra Leone (RSCSL) have denied a rumor circulating on social media to the effect that former President Charles Taylor has been released from prison. Mr. Taylor, now 70, was sentenced in May 2012, to 50 years in jail at age 64, by the then UN-backed Special Court for Sierra Leone (SCSL), after being found guilty of aiding and abetting rebels in Sierra Leone during the 1991-2002 civil war in that country. In an email to this paper on Wednesday December 19, 2018, Mr. Peter C. Andersen, Press officer of the RSCSL, which is an offshoot of the SCSL told the New Dawn that the news is false and that Mr. Taylor is continuing to serve his 50-year sentence for war crimes against humanity. Hilton Monrovia to Open 2023 in Liberia's Capital  Hilton (NYSE:HLT) has signed a Management Agreement with Hospitality Concept & Allied Services Limited to bring its flagship Hilton Hotels & Resorts brand to the capital city of Liberia. The $48m project was unveiled at a signing ceremony today in Monrovia and will see the Hilton name adorn a 192-guest room property in the Eastern suburb of Paynesville. Hilton Monrovia is expected to begin welcoming guests in 2023 and will become the first hotel to open in the city under an international operator. The 12-story tower complex (which will be the tallest building in the country) will contain state of the art conferencing facilities, a restaurant, bar and outdoor pool. Liberia: CIC's debut album '1994' is out in January. Liberia's superstar CIC has released the artwork for the album and announced the date for its release. He posted the news of the anticipated album through his social media page. Liberian Billionaire Richelieu Dennis of SheaMoisture, Essence shares vision for Irvington mansion

The Villa Lewaro estate will be used as a "learning institute, or think tank, to foster entrepreneurship for present and future generations," according to New Voices Foundation's Richelieu Dennis. Just in time for the estate’s 100th anniversary, New Voices Foundation, which was founded by ESSENCE Ventures Chair Richelieu Dennis, has acquired the one-time home of Madam C.J. Walker, known as the first Black woman to become a self-made millionaire in the U.S. The Villa Lewaro estate will be used as a “learning institute, or think tank, to foster entrepreneurship for present and future generations,” according to Dennis. The 28,000-square-foot property is located in Irvington, New York, and boasts 34 rooms. Walker lived in the estate, which in 1976 became a National Historic Landmark, from 1918 to 1919. Named after her daughter, A’Lelia Walker Robinson, the home was the first to be owned by a person of color in Irvington, and welcomed historic guests such as W. E. B.

 President George Manneh Weah has lit the National Christmas Tree on the grounds of the Executive Mansion on Capitol Hill, the first in his capacity as Liberia’s chief executive. His predecessor former President Ellen Johnson – Sirleaf, Chief Justice Francis S. Korkpor, Sr., and Associate Justices of the Supreme Court Bench, international partners, officials and members of the public were in attendance for the event on Tuesday, 18 December.  A member of the Liberian Senate, Sando Johnson is claiming that lawmakers, especially Senators are harboring fears to speak against unfolding issues affecting their constituents to avoid losing the support of the president in their quests for re-election in 2020. “How many of us speaking up right now? Because, especially for the Senate, people are worried, they are not talking because they say well you know, 2020 [Senatorial Election] is coming,” Sen. Liberia: U.S. to Support Pro-Poor Agenda With U.S.$112 Million in Aid

Sendolo According to the statement, signed in Monrovia by the United States Ambassador to Liberia Christine Elder, President George Weah, both countries will continue to work to fulfill the responsibilities they have assumed in connection with their collaborative efforts. The Government of the United States has announced its intention to support Liberia's Pro-Poor Agenda, with a planned budget of approximately U$112 million for the 2018 fiscal year. The planned support for Liberia was announced in a Joint Statement of Collaboration between the Governments of Liberia and the United States and released on Thursday, December 13. Both countries expressed their intention "to actively collaborate in exploring the most sustainable ways to achieve the inclusive growth goals of Liberia's Pro-Poor Agenda." Liberian Native Malvin Glbah

Lakewood High School senior Malvin Glbah was recently selected as a member of the United Soccer Coaches All-America Team. Malvin is just one of 68 young men selected for the honor. The award is icing on a cake full of accolades for Malvin's play this year. His honors include All Lake Erie Regional Team, All Ohio First Team, Greater Cleveland Player of the Year, All Greater Cleveland First Team, and All Southwest Conference Second Team. Malvin joined the LHS soccer program in 2015 during the start of his freshman year at Lakewood High School. His road to Lakewood was not typical or easy. He was born in a refugee camp in Ivory Coast, his family displaced by the extreme civil war in his homeland of Liberia. His family endured refugee camps for many years before eventually coming to the US and finding a home in Lakewood. Liberia: Isaac Kelgbeh Becomes New Presidential Press Secretary

President George Weah and Presidential Press Secretary Isaac Kelgbeh  MONROVIA, Montserrado- President George Weah has appointed Isaac Kelgbeh as his new press secretary. The disclosure was made Tuesday in an Executive Mansion release. Prior to his appointment, Kelgbeh served the UN Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS as Outreach Officer. He now replaces Sam Mannah who became Weah’s first presidential press secretary. Mannah was recently appointed as deputy managing director for administration at the National Insurance Corporation of Liberia. He was reportedly suspended as press secretary to the president for allegedly disclosing confidential information. But the government did not make any public disclosure on the report.

Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan tells pan-African medical confab One of Africa’s renowned scientists and medical doctors, Dr. Dougbeh Christopher Nyan of Liberia, was recently invited to speak at the annual conference of the African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM-2018), a dispatch from Nigeria has said. He spoke on the topic, “Innovation in Africa: Promoting Ingenuity, Addressing Challenges and Building Innovation Ecosystem in Africa.” Dr. Nyan’s multiplex infections diagnostic test was recently awarded a US Patent. Dubious road investor jailed

 The foreign national who allegedly attempted to dupe Liberia of US$32 million from its Federal Reserve’s account has been jailed at the Monrovia Central Prison following his re-arrest Monday, 17 December. Mr. James Lamin Kargbo, believed to be a Sierra Leonean national, is accused of criminally gaining access to Liberia’s swift code and account number at the United States Federal Reserves as a result of engaging in dubious business talks with government officials from the Ministries of State and Finance, according to police findings. He is accused of posing himself as an investor intending to give Liberia loan to finance its road projects. But Montserrado County Attorney Cllr. Edwin Martin told Criminal Court “C” that defendant Kargbo “is one of those con-artists, fraudsters and imposters who is within the basin of West Africa purporting to be an international” personality.  FIFA badge Liberian Referee Isaac Montgomery has resigned from refereeing activities both locally and international. His resignation comes as a result of his appointment as Secretary General at the Liberia Football Association (LFA). According to Montgomery, his decision to step aside from active officiating activities is based on his new role at the Liberian FA. He says his new job is so huge, as he has to manage the secretariat of LFA. He joined the LFA in 2009 as a student referee and he became a national referee in 2013. His first international match was in Benin and he ended his referee career on Saturday, December 15, 2018 in Algeria with a Beninese serving as his Match Commissioner.
