Nigerian Teacher Union Says Only Registered Teachers Will Go To Liberia

The Registrar and Chief Executive, Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), Prof. Segun Ajiboye, on Tuesday said only teachers who were registered with the TRCN would be considered for teaching appointment in Liberia.
Recently President George Weah requested the Nigerian Government to assist Liberia in sending in teachers to Liberia to beef up teacher-pupil gap during his state visit to Nigeria.
Weah said that under the Bilateral Teacher Exchange Programme, Liberia needed more than 6,000 teachers to make up for the shortage of good teachers in the educational system.
Ajiboye, who spoke to journalists at the University of Ibadan, said that TRCN had enough qualified teachers in its fold for the transnational exchange, adding that the body had more than two million qualified teachers in its register.
According to him, the request for Nigerian teachers by the Liberian president was a sign that teachers trained in Nigeria have international appeal.
He said, “The request for Nigerian teachers to develop the educational sector of Liberia was a marker to the international recognition of the quality that a Nigerian teacher is made of.
“We have registered two million qualified and certified professional teachers and only those certified by the council shall be processed for such transnational request.”

Meet Alice Sumo, the midwife who has 1,000 babies named after her in Liberia

Alice Sumo is a respected nurse in Liberia where she has been a midwife for nearly three decades.  She was so loved and respected in Montserrado County that 1,000 babies have been named after her.
Alice, whose name means 'peace', has worked through the civil war and Ebola to do her job. She delivered her first baby at gun point at the side of the road.  In her three-decade career, she did not stop working even during the epidemic which claimed nearly 5,000 lives in Liberia in 2014 and 2015.  New mothers who Alice has cared for and supported through their pregnancy have called their daughters after her or if it's a boy, named him Alex.
Alice now runs a maternal health center opened by Save the Children in her rural community. The children are a living testament to the impact Alice has had in Liberia.
